2015 – New You Day

Exactly 2 years ago I began writing this blog with a post around New Years Day, inspired by some conversations at a New Years Eve party, though those conversations were likely inspired by some cocktails that night.

It’s been a heck of a ride these last 2 years, and they seem to have gone by in the blink of an eye.

At the time, January 2013, I was feeling very unsettled, not so different than I feel today, but there’s a marked difference. I know much more about myself now than I did a mere 2 years ago. I’ve done and accomplished things that I had not imagined. I have failed miserably, dared greatly and had the odds be amazingly in my favor. But that is the wonderful roller coaster ride we call life, isn’t it? The ticket is free, and you can choose to get on the safe side or the scary side. In 2013, I got on the scary side, the side less travelled.

In February 2013, I began a journey of self discovery by enrolling in the Synergy Education “Basic” workshop, which was the first step in the curriculum. I followed the lead of my wife who exposed me to the program. We both went on to take all 3 courses, culminating in the Leadership Program. I saw what I was capable of while operating at my highest and being the best version of myself for the world.  It was eye opening to say the least, confronting at it’s worst, and life changing at it’s best. I remain very active in the Synergy community as a member of the Men’s Group and also serve as a coach in the current Leadership Program. It is something that I am very proud of. In helping others define their own “best version”, I’m continually exploring and growing personally.

So back to this blog. I have actually neglected it for a long time for many reasons, but I’m recommitting to it now for many new reasons. Exercising my writing chops is one, as I will complete and publish my first book this year. In addition, it’s about staying connected and engaged, while maintaining an active public presence to reinforce my professional endeavors.

Today my thoughts are back to New Years Day and the hope of change that it brings. I propose every day be New You Day instead. We don’t need the calendar to flip over for us to commit to change or choose differently. Every morning you are lucky enough to have your feet hit the ground, is a new opportunity to have things be different.

Here’s a great quote I found:

“The chief beauty about time
is that you cannot waste it in advance.
The next year, the next day, the next hour are lying ready for you,
as perfect, as unspoiled,
as if you had never wasted or misapplied
a single moment in all your life.
You can turn over a new leaf every hour if you choose.”
― Arnold Bennett

Powerful right?

In the spirit of traditions, one thing I do look forward to (sort of) on New Years Day is the annual Polar Bear Swim in my community. At 12 noon at least a hundred fearless and crazy souls run screaming into the frigid water at the beach here. Then we run back out. The whole thing lasts about a minute if that. The shortest social event of the year. This will be my 6th year, and today might be the coldest that I’ve done it.

A little spiritual cleansing never hurt anyone, but at 32 degrees, this is one choice I just might be questioning by 12:01
